Demanding dowry is illegal in India; however, people still continue to give it anyway. They often offer expensive gifts to their daughter on the day of the wedding. Here we have a shameful incident from Uttar Pradesh where a groom demanded a Hyundai Creta as dowry, and when the bride’s family couldn’t afford or arrange a Creta, they offered a Maruti WagonR. The groom was not happy with the WagonR and called off the wedding.

The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. The bride’s family had gifted the groom a Maruti WagonR, but he was not happy with it and demanded a Hyundai Creta. The groom, identified as Amir Alam, cancelled the wedding at the last moment. He also stopped the wedding procession from visiting the bride’s house after he realized his demands were not met.
According to reports available online, the bride’s family members only came to know about it at the last moment. They had made all the arrangements; however, they were shocked to know that the groom had cancelled the wedding only because of the car. A video has been circulating online for the last couple of days. In this video, the girl who was supposed to get married can be heard narrating her experience.
She is seen explaining the whole thing while holding back her tears. She mentions that her family was made to suffer for no reason, and the man who cancelled the wedding should face consequences for his actions. According to reports available online, the villagers have already filed a case against the man who cancelled the wedding for not getting the gift he asked for. The groom is said to be absconding after he came to know that the police got involved in the matter.
The comment section under the video is filled with reactions from users. Most of them are blaming the groom for calling off the wedding. Some of them even mention that this has become a common sight in many regions in Uttar Pradesh.
Demanding or giving a bribe is a serious offense under the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961. The Dowry Prohibition Bill was passed in the Joint Sittings of both the Houses of Parliament, and it became an Act – The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 (28 of 1961), receiving the assent of the President on 20th May 1961.
In this Act, “dowry” means any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly by one party to a marriage to the other party to the marriage, or by the parent of either party to a marriage, or by any other person, to either party to the marriage or to any other person.
In this case, the groom was demanding a bigger car and called off the wedding when he didn’t get his gift. While there are reports about a case being registered against the groom, exact details of the same are missing. This is not the first time we have come across a shameful incident like this on the internet. There have even been instances where the bride is often mistreated at her husband’s house for dowry.
