Honda’s entry-level product, the Amaze sedan, was recently tested by Global NCAP under new protocols. In the crash test, the Honda Amaze scored only 2 stars. The compact sedan competes with the likes of the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor in its segment. According to the crash test agency, the Honda Amaze scored 2 stars for adult occupant safety and zero stars for child occupant protection.
The Honda Amaze was previously tested by Global NCAP in 2019, where it received a 4-star rating. The model tested at that time was made in India and sold in the South African market, tested under the old norms. The Honda Amaze is one of the last few cars to be tested by Global NCAP before India completely transitions to the Bharat NCAP safety assessment program.
Honda Cars India, in an official statement, mentioned that according to the new test protocols, “The car is of a 5-star level, and the lower rating is mainly due to the requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and Side Curtain Airbags. We are dedicated to continuously working to enhance our vehicles on all safety parameters and improve them further at model change timing.”
According to the Global NCAP report, both child dummies showed head contact in the frontal impact test. The dummy of the three-year-old suffered from high loadings in the chest and neck, while the dummy of the one-and-a-half-year-old was at risk of being ejected. Missing features like lack of three-point seat belts for all seats, lack of a passenger airbag disconnection switch, and only one provision for CRS installation resulted in a zero-star rating for the Honda Amaze in Child Occupant Protection.
Regarding Adult Occupant Protection, the score was low due to missing features such as optional side head protection, the absence of ESC as standard, and the seat belt reminder feature being offered for the driver only. Honda recently updated the sedan and added more safety features.
It appears that the crash test agency tested the older version with fewer safety features. Honda had updated the Amaze with features like seat belt reminders for all five occupants. The score might have been different if the agency had tested the updated version.
Honda offers the Amaze with safety features like ABS with EBD, dual frontal airbags, rear parking sensors, a rear multi-view camera, a high-speed alert, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages. In the statement, Honda also hinted at the Amaze getting a generational change. Reports suggest that the next-generation Amaze sedan is expected to hit the Indian market later this year.
Since its launch in 2018, Honda has not made many changes to this compact sedan. Its rival, the Maruti Dzire, will also be getting a generational change this year. We hope that the next-generation Honda Amaze will perform better in crash tests. The Honda Amaze is offered with a petrol engine only.
It was previously offered with a diesel engine; however, due to current emission norms, Honda was forced to discontinue it. Like many manufacturers, Honda has completely stopped offering diesel engines with their models and is now offering strong hybrids and petrol engines.
