It’s a pivotal moment for Ryan Coogler. The filmmaker’s critically-acclaimed new movie Sinners—his first original, non-franchise outing since his 2013 debut Fruitvale Station—opens this weekend, and if it succeeds, it has the potential to catapult him into an entirely new echelon as a director. He’s already dressing the part.
To promote Sinners, Coogler has been jetsetting across the globe with his star and frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan—a fashionable tour de force in his own right. But in city after city, Coogler has matched Jordan fit-for-fit in leading-man-worthy looks.
Coogler’s style streak began over two weeks ago at a press conference in Mexico City, where the filmmaker paired a Thom Browne Oxford shirt with some crisp navy pants. (Hot tip: we just called the Oxford shirt “the only button-down you need.”) The next night, he showed up at the CDMX Sinners premiere in a shimmering black suit from Amiri: a double-breasted jacket with wide lapels and the brand’s signature flared dress trousers.
Soon after, the writer-director was in New York City, where the fits came fast and furious. An oversized and slouchy black suit for Good Morning America and a deep maroon sport coat worn with a silky camp shirt for The Tonight Show. Then came a red velvet tuxedo jacket for the New York premiere’s red carpet. Even when his cast went casual for a radio interview, Coogler still busted out a pinwale corduroy suit in the shade of a well-made latte. Talk about a high (fashion) batting average! Four quality fits in just two days.
A few days later, Coogler and the cast popped up in Chicago, where he donned a fabulous pleated suit by the late designer Issey Miyake. He doubled down on texture, pairing the artfully crimped navy ensemble with a checked overcoat. (The filmmaker has owned this suit for a couple of years, so shoutout to celebrities wearing and re-wearing their actual clothes on the red carpet.) After Chicago, Coogler and crew headed to London where he unleashed back-to-back red-carpet dingers: a summery, lightweight suit and an inky, velvety tuxedo.
It felt fitting that a week later (and hopefully with all the press travel behind him), he was photographed courtside at a Golden State Warriors game, rooting for his hometown team in a casual, off-duty fit that still carried the same sharpness of his on-duty style. A billowing black overshirt worn with pleated black trousers and a perfectly faded graphic T-shirt. Here, we’ll say he’s also worn some truly excellent eyewear throughout this run: slim golden frames with art nouveau detailing and a chunky black silhouette from the Japanese label Matsuda. (The M1029, if you were wondering.)
