Met Gala 2025: Pocket Watches Just Had Their Biggest Night in 100 Years

But arguably the night’s coolest pocket watch of all appeared on the afterparty circuit, where Jenna Ortega sported a 14-karat gold Heuer pocket chronograph from 1914. The century-old piece was loaned to the Wednesday star by Heuer super collector (and Watch Illuminati high priest) Jeff Stein. Between its gold composition and split-second chronograph function, Stein told me over email, “ this would have been among the most expensive timepieces in the Heuer catalog, and was the ultimate timepiece for the sports enthusiast.”

Stein imagines the piece would have been used for horse racing, track events, and swimming over 100 years ago. “Think of the wealthy industrialist attending the Kentucky Derby or training horses,” he added. “This was the cool guy’s watch. [The] Richard Mille [of] 110 years ago.”

In that sense, Ortega’s pocket watch managed to follow suit with one of today’s defining trends: wearing a sporty (but still luxurious!) timepiece to a fancy red-carpet event..
