Threads adjusts its algorithm to show you more content from accounts you follow

After several complaints about its algorithm, Meta’s X competitor Instagram Threads is making changes that will allow it to surface more content from people you follow in the algorithmic feed.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in a Threads post that the social network has adjusted its algorithm to show less content from accounts you don’t follow.

“We are rebalancing ranking to prioritize content from people you follow, which will mean less recommended content from accounts you don’t follow and more posts from the accounts you do starting today,” Mosseri wrote in a post.

He warned that creators might see their ‘unconnected’ reach dip.

“For you creators out there, you should see unconnected reach go down and connected reach go up. This is definitely a work in progress – balancing the ability to reach followers and overall engagement is tricky – thanks for your patience and keep the feedback coming,” Mosseri added.

The social network globally rolled out the ability for users to create custom feeds earlier this week, allowing people to have more control over what kind of content they see. Apart from these custom feeds, Threads has a dedicated Following feed, but the app defaults to the algorithmic For You feed, which is controlled by Meta.

Meta is moving quickly to make these changes at a time when many users are heading to Bluesky, which has surpassed 20 million users. While there is a big gulf in terms of numbers, as Threads has more than 275 million monthly active users, Bluesky is showing competitive daily active users as compared to Threads, according to market intelligence firm Similarweb.
